Toyola Energy Group is a renowned indigenous social enterprise that specializes in selling energy-efficient cookstoves across West Africa. Established in 2003 by Suraj Wahab in Ghana, the company has grown significantly and operates in multiple countries including Nigeria, Togo, Benin, and Senegal. They are committed to promoting clean cooking solutions by manufacturing and distributing cookstoves that are more efficient and environmentally friendly than traditional methods in the region. A notable achievement of Toyola Energy is their pioneering use of carbon finance to promote clean cooking. They partnered with E+Carbon in 2009 to implement one of the earliest cookstove projects registered by the Gold Standard in Ghana. They also coordinate the Clean Development Mechanism Program of Activities (CDM PoA) 9666, promoting efficient cookstoves in West Africa. The Swedish Energy Agency has purchased Certified Emission Reductions that resulted from this program. Their efforts have been recognized through numerous awards, including the Ashden International Gold Award for Sustainability in 2011 and the CEO, Suraj Wahab had the privilege of meeting King Charles III. Suraj Wahab was also voted Africa's leading Energy personality. Toyola Energy has a pipeline of Gold Standard projects for Benin and Togo, with plans for expansion into Ghana, Senegal, Cameroon, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. They aim to implement indigenous technology and community-focused initiatives, such as safe drinking water projects and replacing wick lamps with solar LED lighting.
